NBA 2026-27 Opening Week: Complete Schedule and Matchups

The NBA returns on October 20 with a rare afternoon tip-off in Detroit. Fans mapping out their viewing schedules are looking at a packed opening week that features immediate tests for title contenders and historic matchups spanning both conferences.

Opening Night: Tuesday's Tip-Off

The 2026–27 NBA regular season begins on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The schedule starts early with an afternoon game, sending the Boston Celtics to visit the Detroit Pistons at 3:00 PM ET. This unconventional start time immediately breaks the usual prime-time mold for opening day.

Later that evening, the focus shifts to traditional time slots. The Philadelphia 76ers play the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden at 7:00 PM ET, bringing an early division test to New York. The opening night concludes in Texas, where the Oklahoma City Thunder play against the San Antonio Spurs at 9:30 PM ET.

Wednesday's Heavy Slate

Wednesday, October 21, carries the bulk of the opening week schedule with several high-profile Western Conference matchups. The Golden State Warriors visit the Los Angeles Lakers at 10:00 PM ET, a fixture that consistently draws heavy viewership regardless of the standings.

Earlier in the evening, the Minnesota Timberwolves face the Miami Heat in Miami at 7:30 PM ET. Texas hosts another game as the Dallas Mavericks play the Houston Rockets at 8:30 PM ET. For late-night viewers, the schedule includes the Phoenix Suns at the Portland Trail Blazers at 10:00 PM ET, followed closely by the Sacramento Kings at the Los Angeles Clippers at 10:30 PM ET.

Thursday and Friday Clashes

The latter half of the week sets up immediate conference tests for remaining playoff contenders. On Thursday, October 22, the Cleveland Cavaliers play against the Philadelphia 76ers in Philadelphia at 7:00 PM ET. Shortly after, the Denver Nuggets visit the Oklahoma City Thunder at 9:30 PM ET.

Friday rounds out the initial slate with two major games on October 23. The New York Knicks face the Boston Celtics in Boston at 7:00 PM ET. Out West, the Houston Rockets play against the San Antonio Spurs at 9:30 PM ET, marking the second game of the week for both Texas franchises.
